SEOW UPDATES & HIGHLIGHTS

NEEDS ASSESSMENT- The Steering Committee is conducting a Needs Assessment to help inform future SEOW efforts, products, and publications. The needs assessment includes a survey for both individuals who do and do not engage with the Colorado SEOW, as well as interviews with representatives from SEOWs in nearby states. Assessment results will be available in January

We will be asking for your assistance to complete a survey in the coming weeks. If you know of an individual or organization that would provide valuable and appropriate feedback, please contact Sydney Chaves to have them added to the survey distribution list.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS: Our September SEOW meeting covered the topic of data equity concerns surrounding Native American and Alaska Native populations. Shelly Solopow led us in a fruitful presentation and discussion of her work as a Tribal Liason at CDHS. A recording of her presentation can be found on the SEOW website.

RECENT REPORTS & RESOURCES
Connecting people to data is one goal of the SEOW. Check out these additional resources and opportunities from our partners and other reliable sources.

Binge drinking among Colorado adults: results from the 2018 Colorado Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (published by our very own, Julia Stullken on CHED Publications page)
  • Most adults who binge drank (50.3%) did so at home, and people who did report binging at home did so more frequently.
  • Despite having a lower overall binge drinking prevalence, younger adults with lower levels of education and lower household incomes generally consumed a higher number of drinks - suggesting that intersecting lived experiences (and systemic inequities) may contribute to the quantity of alcohol consumed among those who binge drink.
  • People who drank beer reported the highest average number of drinks consumed (5.2 beers).
  • Responses to the Binge Drinking Module are highly skewed, meaning that a small number of respondents provided answers that were much higher than the rest of the responses for some questions. For this reason, median and 75th percentile are presented in this report along with means and corresponding confidence intervals.

Do No Harm Guide to Data Visualization: Applying Equity Awareness in Data Visualization
This resource from the Urban Institute challenges us to consider all equity implications when creating data visualizations. Check out the best-practices from Jonathan Schwabish and Alice Feng.
