Health Statistics Regional Profiles (Coming Soon):
SEOW

The Colorado SEOW is excited to announce the upcoming release of 21 Health Statistics Regional Profiles covering both single and multi-county areas. These profiles are part of a broader initiative informed by a needs assessment conducted in 2021, which underscored the need for timely and localized data to support substance misuse prevention and treatment professionals.

Designed as a valuable resource for community members and stakeholders, the regional profiles will provide an overview of localized data by Health Statistics Regions. These profiles are intended to inform local initiatives, programs, policies, and other activities by highlighting substance use trends. Users can explore the profiles on the SEOW website and download the data for further analysis.

The profiles are anticipated to be released later this year. An email announcement will be officially made when they are live on the SEOW website

New data! The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment released two new data products with information from the Colorado State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System or SUDORS. SUDORS provides additional information about fatal drug overdoses from coroner and medical examiner reports, such as the circumstances of the death and the substances involved in the overdose. This enhanced data collection for SUDORS began with overdose deaths in 2020. The two SUDORS data products are a factsheet and a dashboard. The department also revamped the drug overdose dashboard by splitting it into smaller dashboards to speed up the dashboard loading and allow users quick access to a single data source. You can access the new SUDORS dashboard and the other overdose dashboards from the Colorado Drug Overdose Data Dashboard. For those who like to bookmark dashboards, a tip is to bookmark COHID and scroll down to the Drug Overdose button, which will always take you to the correct landing page for overdoses, even when the department updates any overdose dashboard. If you bookmarked the previous landing page, you'll not have access to the new data.

Any inquiries? Contact cdphe.healthstatistics@state.co.us about the drug overdose dashboards, visit the CDPHE data request system for custom data requests, or email odprevention@state.co.us for requests for dashboard demonstrations.

Healthy Kids Colorado Survey 2023: Results from CDPHE
CDPHE

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) recently released the 2023 results of the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey, revealing positive trends among youth. Notably, high schoolers experiencing persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness dropped by 14 percentage points, the lowest since the survey began. Alcohol use decreased by 3% and vaping by 7%, highlighting the impact of community prevention efforts.

However, there’s a concerning rise in early alcohol consumption among middle schoolers, with 24% reporting they have ever consumed alcohol—up from 11% in 2021. Additionally, 14% had their first drink before age 11. These findings underscore the need for effective prevention strategies for vulnerable youth.

The 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) has been released by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), revealing significant trends in mental health and substance use across the United States. Key findings indicate that 22.8% of adults reported experiencing mental illness in the past year, with nearly 4.5 million youth facing major depressive episodes. More adults and adolescents are accessing mental health treatment compared to previous years. However, challenges remain, including opioid misuse and rising vaping rates, along with notable disparities among different demographic groups.

YRBS Data Summary and Trends Report, 2013-2023
CDC

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published the Youth Risk Behavioral Survey (YRBS) Data Summary & Trends Report: 2013-2023, which examines the health behaviors and experiences of high school students in the United States. This comprehensive report highlights key findings, including increased rates of violence, poor mental health, and suicidal thoughts among female and LGBTQ+ students compared to their male and cisgender peers. While there are early signs of improvement in adolescent mental health, school violence continues to be a pressing issue.

The report also shows trends over the past decade, including decreases in substance use and concerning increases in experiences of violence and signs of poor mental health among students. This data serves as a vital resource for educators, policymakers, and health professionals working to improve the well-being of youth.
